There is a lot of hype surrounding this book. I would say it mostly lives up to it, but also that this novel is a bit overstated. It's good, but not life-changing. But alas, hype can be a curse because reader's will judge it more harshly if it doesn't fulfill their expectations. This book was a lot of fun and quite good. The things I liked are things like the fact that the author is obviously a passionate reader with a love of stories and language. The characters were engaging and fleshed-out. The different worlds were imaginative and the concept of worlds connected via "doors", while not new, is obviously an engaging one given how many well-loved stories have used it. I also really liked the parts telling Adelaine's story. I found Adelaine to be a more engaging character than January. Overall, a fantastic novel, especially when considering that this is Harrow's debut novel.

The story took a while to really get a full head of steam, at least for me. It didn't seem to really get moving until a little over the halfway point. My only real complaint is that this book
Spoilerplays very nice. The author never seems to take any big risks (apart from writing a novel in the first place, which is no small task, obviously). Nothing really bad happens. Very much a "happily ever after" type story.

I really wanted to love this as much as The Once and Future Witches, but it fell really flat for me.

"Books are doors"...what a magical story.

A very airy and whimsical book that was really close to amazing. I feel like it went a little too heavily into what felt like YA adventure territory.

What it did best and should have done more of was be a fairy tale. Or even as a piece of modern storytelling/mythology without quite as much of coming of age and social commentary.

Nothing against either of those things per se but it felt a bit half-baked in those areas and they dragged the rest down a notch or two.

This was a magical read.

The writing was whimsical and very fun to read, I found most words bounced off each other. January’s thoughts were interesting and I enjoyed being in her head, she was a brilliant narrator.

The story was interesting, sometimes I felt the plop dipped a little but I enjoyed it. I was captivated for the most part.

The characters were also very interesting; Samual, Jane, January. And even the villains were interesting themselves.

I’m glad I found this joke on Libby, I wasn’t planning on reading it but it was great!

4.5 stars. A good old fashioned magical adventure with love stories and monsters and mystery [and more]. Such a fun ride! Would also probably classify as YA but it's quite long.

8/10, very good.

LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Had such a great time reading this book and following the journey of January. Such a beautiful book and reminder to stay wild and free.
