A beautiful book, inside and out!

From page 1, I fell in love with Harrow's beautiful prose. Her writing is gorgeous and descriptive without being overly so- like reading a vivid memory instead of being told a story. If you love this kind of writing style, you will fall in love with this book.

A big drawback for me, however, was the plot. I wish this book focused on the actual Doors and the worlds that connect them. We spend the majority of this book explaining the Doors- which in some regard is the purpose of this book; however, I felt as though the lack of focus around discovering the Doors and the worlds caused the conflict to not be as suspenseful or have much of an impact.

Overall, this book has gorgeous prose and is a love letter to words and stories. The plot is not the focus, though is still engaging enough to hook you. Definitely worth the read!

I enjoyed this fantasy story about Doors to other worlds. I thought the idea of portals that represent change and have leakage from other realms was really interesting. If I had read this when I was 12, I’m sure I would have given it 5 stars.

In my top 10 books of all time. There are not even words enough to write this review. Just read it and let it impact you. Seriously.

Okay, hear me out. I hated this book at first. I was ready, for the first time, to not finish a book. I really was that uninterested in what I was reading. Suddenly, though, we hit the point where things go haywire and I was like OH SHIT. I got super into it in the middle, and then I got bored again for the last third really. The ending was also very bittersweet. I mean, I love this concept of doors opening to other words. The writing style was interesting. It was a good story overall, but sooooooo drawn out. There’s a review that say, “gorgeous, aching love letter,” and that really sums it up. It’s a very beautifully achy story. So because the middle third was pretty good, I’m giving this 3 stars. Will I pick up this book again to read whenever I want a familiar or comforting story, where I’ve fallen in love with the characters and want to spend time with them again? No. Am I super upset that I read this? Also no.

A sweet story. There is an attempt to make a complex plot but it is rather transparent. The main villain is presented in a nuanced way.
