I think this is my third time reading this book, but probably the first time in more than a decade. I still enjoy this story of kids helping save tiny owls.

I loved that this book was set in Florida and the author is from there as well its a fast-paced story a few parts made me laugh and the nature aspect about saving the owls was a really good addition to the story. All the characters were really strong and well rounded, each character had their part to play. This was my first time reading any books by Carl Hiaasen but it won’t be my last, great story.
I enjoyed the plot of kids being able to save an animal from being hurt. It was a quick read and entertaining. My son was a big Carl Hiaasen fan growing up and I can see that this book would have kid appeal.

I thought about beginning this review with a catchy phrase that sums up the book but didn't want to spoil anything. I will say though, that there were several twists and turns in the novel that I wasn't expecting. There is an interesting mix of characters but one still has to wonder, what does Roy's father do for the government exactly? (and no, that's not a teaser for the book, but I'm hoping that there will be more clues in the next book, Flush.
I read this for school. It was sooooo slow in the beginning
This gets a really high 3 stars from me. It's close to getting a 4, except I don't think I was that interested in the plot, actually. The writing and the characters were great, however, and so were the messages. The characters are what I liked the best-Mullet Fingers is a wonderful creation, and so is Beatrice. I wasn't very interested in most of the adult characters, but the young adults were cool and well done. I think since I liked the characters more than the plot, I was slightly let down by the ending. It wasn't bad, but I felt like it focused more on plot than characters. And I think that's about all I have to say.
In this realistic fiction book, the main character Roy, moves to Florida with his family. Roy soon realizes that something weird is happening in the town, things like a barefoot boy running through the neighborhood, police cars and property being vandalized, and tiny little owls that have made this area their home. Throughout the book, Roy learns new things about himself and his own ideals as he tries to help his new friends.
It was pretty good. It wasn't until about the end of the book where it started talking about the owls a lot. I thought it was also quite funny.
It was a cute read, but didn't really capture my attention too much. It had a good message about standing up for what you believe in and protecting the environment. Good read for elementary age children.
