Roy just moved to Coconut Cove, Florida. He is having major problems with the bully, Dana. One day on the bus, Roy spots a young boy about his age. The boy was running beside the bus. Roy didn't know the boy and was wondering about him. The strangest thing about him is that the boy was wearing no shoes!
Later, Roy sees the boy again. Roy follows to boy to find out who he is. When Roy finally finds out who he is, he, Beatrice, and the mysterious boy go off to save some owls that are going to be killed.

This is a great YA novel which is different from all the other YA novels I've read. As much as I've liked some that are about supernatural creatures, it was lovely to read a story set firmly in the real world. Also, it makes a nice change not to have any romance. Life isn't all love and magic.

I read this to my 7 yr-old and he loved it and was engaged, though the language was a bit too sophisticated for him sometimes and there were long words I had to explain. When my children who are now in their 20s heard that we were reading this book they remembered it as one that they had loved when they read it themselves in their pre-teen years.

All of the characters in Hoot are complex and believable. The situation is familiar and their heroism is wonderful but would be easy to emulate. It's never dull despite being so down-to-earth.

The central character is Roy who has just started a new school after moving to Florida from Montana. He sees a barefoot, running boy from the window of the school bus which a bully is pressing his face against. Meanwhile, a local cop goes to investigate vandalism on a building site. It's all about the burrowing owls. That's the important thing all through the book. And there's a tough, soccer-playing girl called Beatrice the Bear. I'm not going to spoil the story by saying any more.
