Carl Hiaasen is always a good read. He gives you some laughs, a good story, and always a lovely view of his native Florida.
I read this as a kid, and recently re-read it for funsies. It was a decently fun book! A little heavy handed, and is like, "oppose the system without going too far!" But it has a happy ending and is decently fun without being disruptive. So that's cool.

It is a very slow pace book. It has ending and I don't really like it.

Hoot - What a strange title. We start out on the school bus where the "new" kid is getting beat up by the school bully, whose is an extremely violent boy. The new Roy or "cowgirl" as the bully likes to call him finds his face smashed into the bus window where he spots the barefoot running boy. Roy becomes fascinated to find out more about the boy but must contend with the bully. There are several subplots in the story -- bullying, fitting in at a new school, concern for the welfare of another and conservation. They are all inter-twined but come to a sensible ending. I enjoyed the book and stayed up until 3am to finish it it. Not because I had to but because I wanted to.

Read aloud to my 11 year old. This was a fun story with a simple, good plot. We both liked the silliness of some of the antics of the character Mullet Fingers.
