This was just ‘fine’. I didn’t really care about the characters and the two love interests’ love seemed to sort of grow out of nowhere. ‘I loved you since I saw you in Jeval.’ You didn’t know her? Just so strange. I thought the world building was pretty cool though, and I’m always up for a bit of a pirate story. But I wouldn’t really call this a ‘thrilling’ read necessarily. It had enough action to keep me entertained, but not to keep me glued to the book. The writing was also just kind of fine. There was nothing particularly spectacular about this book, but nothing bad either. Though the twist at the end was lame lol.
3.5 stars. Really enjoyed this book and although it was a slow burn and dragged at times, I think the author set up the story beautifully for Namesake. I have big hopes for it. Also can we just talk about the fact that the love interest is blonde, haven’t come across one of those in a while.

UM CLIFFHANGER MUCH??? ok but in all seriousness, this book is fantastic! Very much reminds me of Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller, which is one of my favorite books. This book really does have everything- lovely, powerful female protagonist, convincing world-building, sad backstories, and an appropriately broody male love interest. Enjoyed so so much, and will buy the second book immediately after writing this!

It may have been the audiobook reader, but ohhh was that a whole lot of nothing. Just kinda bored for most of it, and it took ages to get through. I don't even have anything withering to say about it, just...bleh. There wasn't reaely a drive to anything; theoretically it was about finding family but I'm not sure sleeping with the captain and giving everyone a lot of money really makes you part of the family, even if they all kind of accept you for it. No urgency or interest except when the ship was damaged--that's the only time I really felt invested, and it was because I liked the ship more than anyone else in the book.
Fable doesn't have much more character than general "I'm tough"--I never felt especially connected, which, in a first person story, sure is a weird experience.
