I just couldn’t find the writing style intriguing or the characters flushed out enough to care. I saw potential in the world, and I’m taking into consideration that it’s a YA novel, but I think that the writing style was repetitive in phrasing, immature and generally boring.

This was a good book, maybe not great, but definitely good, and I do want to continue on to the next one. The world is fascinating and so are the characters, unfortunately that is part of the frustration. The story doesn't delve into the fascinating aspects enough. There is obviously a magic system, but little is said about it. The characters seem like they have interesting stories, but we only get surface level information. This could have gone from good to great if the story has slowed down a bit and been more detailed.
I am almost impressed by the authors ability to make a story about pirates, treasure hunting, murder and romance the most mind numbingly boring book I've ever listened to.
