okay hoarding is a serious mental illness and isn’t like a cute organized disorder. i couldn’t get past that and the fact that children are flying planes alone with no parental supervision….
this book was better than I thought it was going to be. i was expecting it to be a surface level romance but there was more than that. i loved the friendship aspect of this novel and what it’s like having a life long friend since a young age. the side plot of hoarding was so interesting and a bit sad at times. the romance! it was more slow burn than expected and how they got together was too cute! overall highly recommend
4.5. I chose this as a quick beach read. I would highly recommend this book to those who like almost-but-not-quite cheesy romance stories— but this book is so much more than that. It centers on mental health and the idea of addressing, not avoiding, your problems. Plus, all the references to old classics were just perfect!
I know this isn’t really any different from most typical YA contemporary novels, but I still enjoyed it. I think the bookish elements helped hold my attention and I also enjoyed the hoarding element (don’t ask me why, but it was super interesting to me). I wasn’t a fan of how Asher felt too mature to be an actual teenage boy and it made the romance seem a little far-fetched.
I was trying to read this book almost three times, but I felt that it’s not a read I will be able to focus at the moment. I was wrong. I finally sat down and started reading and it turned out to be a wonderful book.
Darcy Wells is a book fanatic. She has a big talent to memorize all the words she’s reading but also, she’s a walking dictionary since she knows the meanings of the world most of the people don’t even know about. She’s leading her life in a shadow. She doesn’t mind being invisible as long as she has her best friend and books around. However, the invisibility also helps her to keep her secret away from everyone. She’s ashamed of the way her life looks like with her mother’s compulsive shopping. Her house looks like a warehouse, full of unnecessary stuff.
I hated that she was alone with all of this. Her father was long gone, her grandmother besides sending her money didn’t put any effort to support her in this situation, and her mother was bringing more and more stress into their household. If not her best friend Marisol, she would be already as depressed as her mom is. I love that even if the situation isn’t getting better, she still finds comfort and hope in her books and friend.
I think meeting Asher Fleet was a trigger for Darcy to be more visible. She was slowly falling for him even if she didn’t want to admit it. Her fairy tale started with his first break spent at the bookstore she’s working in. She was sharing her love for stories and words with him and he shared his interests and life facts with her. I can say that he was fascinated with her from the very beginning even if he had a girlfriend at the time. He’s a good guy so he didn’t step out of line. He was a good friend for her and showed her how much he cares about her.
I love the relationship between Darcy and Asher. They are so adorable and all the little things he does for her melted my heart. Moreover, he pushed her into the solution of her problems which led her into the best change possible. I think he was the first person that showed him that everyone is messed up and has many things in their life that are not perfect. It doesn’t mean that we need to put a mask on and hide from the world and close the door to your life in front of people that care about you.
The message shared at the end of the book was marvelous and surprising. I think it’s the most important part of the story and should be shared by all of us. This story has a beautiful moral that many of us should learn. It shows that you can’t let your secrets makes yourself someone you’re not, make you invisible. Instead of hiding them, we should show that they doesn’t define who we are. I hope my review showed you a spark of how amazing this story is, and I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

TERRIBLE. I read this for bookclub but then also had to miss bookclub. I wouldn't have finished it if I didn't pay for this and have it assigned for bookclub. This book drags, it is not interesting. It is very quirky but not in a good way. I do not like any of the characters, and the I did not care about any of their problems. I know this is YA but I don't like it as a YA novel either!

Beautiful prose. It gave me a bit of nostalgia through the many book references, and I felt a kinship to the main character, Darcy. It's a book for book lovers, for sure. Lots of introspection, and a well done first person narrative. If you like being in a character's head, this one's a good one. It took me a week to read it, which is a quick turn around for me these days with my busy schedule. I like the quotes that begin each chapter, as well as the book's overarching themes. Plot aside, the writing really resonated with me. Delightful imagery throughout. The romance felt heavier than I thought was necessary, and the end seemed a bit rushed. It's a solid four stars, with a fifth star added for bringing me joy. I thoroughly enjoyed it, flaws and all.
Highly recommend for the bookworms and booklovers!
