honestly this is the longest it’s ever taken me to finish a book.
it was so enthralling and i was so invested most of the time, but toward the end it started to get really slow for me and i had a hard time getting through the last one or two hundred pages or so.
overall, not bad. im not much of a fantasy reader, so that also contributes to my opinions.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

What is most impressive to me is the slow but thorough build of the hard magic system and a world that feels expansive and lived in in terms of idk religion, politics, geography, career, history etc. The amount of detail in the day to the day that are set up as threads that will surely come back again is very satisfying to read.
For example this quote abt the inheritance about library organisation systems across governments.... just makes the world feel rich.
This magic school also made me nostalgic in remembrance of my time at art school and dealing with difficult mentors, maximizing your strengths and seeking specialisation, being above average but not a prodigy, the zeal with which the teachers taught their subjects...
I personally adore time loop stories and I'm thrilled that this one still makes zorian deal with the inconveniences that come with each reset instead of handwaving it away for him to become some enlightened being who is beyond the tedium of having to take the train everytime and convince someone in every loop even if it breaks momentum.
My biggest gripe is how bland and uninspired the prose is. This is what makes me hesitant to recommend it to people even though its simplicity and function was what made me read it this quickly to begin with. This and the fact that the theming of it all and the rich inner worlds of other characters and character dynamics are not the focus at all. It is also quite bloated and especially in the next arc the invasion thing takes a huge backseat for a while which makes me just go um. What are we doing here rn haha. But thats for the review of the next arc (if I finish).
Zach in my head is played by Mingyu of seventeen and I find him endearing and wish Zorian would talk to him more in the loops instead of avoiding him for 7 loops straight and just become friends.
The fact that he goes and buys a gun after other magical items are restricted to him as a student is pretty fricking awesome imo.
As much as I enjoyed this I have to say I am a bit fatigued... let's see when I come back to this series because I do want to know what goes down when the loop will finally end.

But yes, being once part of the Old Alliance, the Splinter Nations inherited much of its administrative legacy, including library organization.”

There was no sane teacher in this school, it seemed. Zorian wondered whether it was the stress of teaching itself that was producing these kind of effects, or if you simply had to be crazy to accept a teaching position here.

Excellent book. It’s a very interesting concept and I really like the progression fantasy element. Zorian really grows on you. His character development is great. He goes from a very unlikable character to truly loveable over the course of the story.
Its really impressive that this went from an internet fiction to a fully published book.

Though the main character starts out as a miserable excuse of a protagonist, he grows quickly and becomes someone worth appreciating the company of.
It's hard to get into the plot or his development without spoilers.

Great take on time loop
Surprised by how well executed it was and how well the characters developed. I expected the characters to be a weak point of it and if anything it feels like they were one of the books great strengths.

Doesn't quite hit the right balance of repetitiveness for the looping, but it gets better as it goes on, and overall still pretty fun. The characters aren't great, but the world is a reasonably well done version with D&D-like casters but no martial classes (at least none that we hear about). Will definitely be continuing.
