"I know that something has changed. I don't know what it means for me, or for him. But the game we're playing just got a little more real. A little more life or death."
I was looking for something drastically different to get me out of a book slump brought on by too many underwhelming reads, and WOW did I find exactly what I didn't know I was looking for!
I've read Karina Halle before, but nothing like this. This is not your average fantasy—it's a fascinating blend of reimagined classics, myths (think Beauty and the Beast meets Hades and Persephone) and folklore.
The Finnish mythology that inspired Halle lends perfectly with the dark, ruthless but not heartless, deviant, and macabre fantasy world she's created in River of Shadows(Underworld Gods, book 1) and with the cliffhanger — what's going to happen next!? — ending I am not so patiently waiting for Crown of Crimson, set to release in May 2022.

This book is exactly the kind of book I like, enemies to lovers (well not quite yet), fantasy worlds, and gods. My family is Finnish and I really enjoyed the mythology of this book, can't wait to read the next one.
River of Shadows was such a good book! I feel like I'll always be in the mood for some dark mythology retellings. Or any kind of dark retelling if I'm being completely honest here. They are just way too easy to devour.
In this, you will meet Hanna. She is 24 years old and heading to Finland for her father's funeral. Of course, once she arrives things aren't adding up. She starts questioning if he's really dead or not. After getting some much-needed answers, she heads off on an adventure to go find and save him.
Besides meeting Hannah, you get to meet Rasmus. He's on the adventure with her until he isn't. Together, they were okay. I didn't feel anything romantic between them. Not like the yummy sexual tension and chemistry between her and the god of death. Now them, I absolutely loved and couldn't get enough of.
The only thing I really wanted before the book ended was their marriage. Definitely hoping that will happen in the next book. Or that death will find a way to get her back? Something like that because they were so good together! I need more steamy scenes between them too.
