it was good, and has set up for a lot more to come, but the characters felt underdeveloped at times.
What a wonderful start to a series. This is like a Hades and Persephone/Beauty and the Beast type book with a twist. I don't know anything about finnish folklore, but this was a wonderful introduction that has me curious to learn more. This is a trilogy and I needed to start book 2 as soon as possible after reading that crazy ending.
This was the perfect book to fill the Fantasy Romance with Spice void I needed to start the year off. Imagine Hades as the Beast and Persephone as Bell and you have this book. It started out very modern but then quickly descended into the underworld. I really enjoyed the characters and the spice.
Let me start off this review and simply say this book was amazing. I've been going over it in my head to try and put into words all that goes on in this book to explain how magically wonderful this world is but I'm at a loss. An author I am not!
From the start the story pulls you in and with each new character brought to the pages I am became completely engrossed with this book. Hanna's story begins with what she thinks is a tragic event and turns into something she never expected. She goes out on a quest to see the God of Death and encounters all the interesting characters along the way. We don't yet know who has her best interests at heart and who is out to use her. This book does end on a major cliffhanger and honestly as much as it killed me the book was so good I didn't care. I will wait patiently (not really lol) for the next book. Can't wait to see what happens to them next!!

'He will do anything to stop you from making this trade, but it is already done. You can call me Death. And I will call you mine.'
This book was an unexpected winner for me. Really wasn't sure I was feeling it at the start but wow it really turned around. Hanna was such a relatable character - she wasn't whiny but she wasn't overly romanticised either, or at least that's what I thought and then Death had me swooning.
I think the world and the side characters could have been developed a little more but saying that I didn't think the story was lacking either. I'm sure more will be explored over the coming books and I'm so excited to see where it all goes!

What in the Stockholm Syndrome did I just read? This author tried hard to make the MC out to be a bada** but in actuality she had no backbone at all. Our only evidence is that she killed a swan?? I can respect wanting to save your father, but there is no need to give the bad guy endless ideas of how to use and abuse you. Let’s be thankful she is a social media manager and not a lawyer. So many things bothered me while reading this that I’m not even sure where to start.
- Throwing in that the MC is magically an expert swordsman is just ridiculous. No one is buying that, Shaman blood or not.
- Her whole rant about how she was a basic b*tch was cringe (pretty accurate though).
- I cannot fathom why the author felt the need to add in Rasmus randomly getting a BJ from a Mermaid in public or to mention that the MC liked anime porn and frequently left her Barbie’s in compromising positions as a CHILD (WTH?!)
- The amount of times the word yeet was used was obnoxious and felt out of place.
- I don’t want to go too in depth on the “romance” but I felt uncomfortable with their dynamic. She was his prisoner and he rarely waited for consent. As readers, we get the benefit of knowing the MC’s thoughts and knowing that she is willing, but he can’t read her mind. He frequently commanded her to strip naked or to wait for him in compromising positions for him to have his way with her and she didn’t even put up a fight. If the author handled these characters differently, I think this could have been great. She should have been spunky and made a deal with a loop hole she could exploit. He should have been grudgingly impressed by it and been a complete gentleman until she made the first move or at the very least gotten consent first. This approach would have also added more build up and sexual tension if done right.
I don’t like this “dark romance” trend where “dark” is almost interchangeable with the word rape. And just wait, he’ll be her knight in shining armor in book two just to add layers to this disfuntion. It’s a no from me.
