Ugh this book. What despicable characters - none of them were relatable or likable (maybe the sister and her wife? Maybe?). I'm not even sure we could call this a thriller because about 90% of the book consists of Veronica just making excuses for her bad behavior and complaining.

I give it two stars for the creepy ending, but that's about it.

This was a good book.

It was very predictable but it was good non the less.

Veronica was an imature, self rightgeous brat. She really got on my last nerves.

The twist at the very end in chapter 26 was interesting but semi-predictable. I was shocked but one thing. ;)

It was a nicely written book albeit extremely predictable. Fast summer read with no thought required. The writer really developed the main character, but unfortunately she was so insecure I kept feeling her insecurity (but did not want to). Since it played into the story, I'll forgive it but there were pages on end dedicated to showing she was insecure. I wish she had made her a little stronger and developed the other extremely flat characters more (or made the book a little shorter - this really should have been a short story or novella).

Very disappointing. I loved Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone, but this book was boring and all characters (except the daughter Sydney) were just annoying and pathetic. I generally like the author’s writing style, but there was a lot of repetition with the main character’s thoughts and I figured out the big twist early one because unfortunately the story was also extremely predictable on top of everything. If you are new to thrillers this might be a good pick, otherwise skip it.

I zipped through this and enjoyed it a lot. There was a 30 page stretch near the end, though, where the reader figures out the situation but the character is still wandering around oblivious, which slowed me down quite a bit. The main character doesn't learn a lot, either; even when she has insights into her own behavior, it doesn't really change her behavior.

That said, the story kept me reading and there was a lot of interesting ambiguity.

Fine but if you read thrillers regularly, you’re going to wonder why she doesn’t know what’s happening around her

Review originally published on my blog, Musings of a Bookish Kitty:

When Veronica’s husband Johnny finds a missing child while out on a hike, their lives are irrevocably changed. The media exposure attracts more business Johnny’s way, something the financially strapped couple needs. Although, Veronica wants nothing to do with the limelight, wishing to keep her secrets and marital unhappiness under the radar. She isn’t too keen on the continued police interest either, nor is Johnny. To say more . . . well, that might be too much of a spoiler.

Author Victoria Helen Stone’s domestic thriller is emotionally tense to say the least. Veronica and Johnny have a ten year old daughter who they love dearly, and would do anything for. I was not particularly fond of most of the characters in the novel, and that includes Veronica. It was through that link as a parent myself that I could better understand some of Veronica’s choices, even if I did not always agree with her. Veronica grew on me as a result. False Step was a compelling read which I found hard to put down. Veronica’s anxiety and fears play a big part in that. I wish I could say the ending came as a big surprise, but while it didn’t, I still really wanted to know how exactly everything would play out. False Step may not be the most memorable thriller I have read, but it was entertaining and makes for a fun quick read.
