I had so much fun reading this book! Mavis is awesome and I would love to be her friend. She is just so relatable and realistic; I feel her stress trying to keep everything together with her daughter, her love life, her family, her job, oh and trying to find some happiness for herself! I struggle so much knowing what I like and working on any time of self care and so this book really spoke to me. I love how Mavis can see through all the BS, and she has so much more patience than I do. I feel for her trying to navigate the school and community when she is oftentimes the only Black woman (or even person) in the room. She is smart and savvy and does not give up no matter what gets in her way. Though she will drop everything and take care of her daughter. This book was hilarious and personally my favorite type of slightly irreverent but also hard hitting mystery. There were so many shocks in this story and I LOVED THE ENDING.

Elise Bryant knows how to create a funny and interesting mystery! It is clear she has worked in education because she has nailed the tone of public school and community experiences. 😂 The reveal and ending was chef’s kiss. I can’t wait for book three!
