This is the second book in Bryant's Mavis Miller series. I listened to the first on audio maybe a week before I read this one. Sometimes a series is propulsive and the stories really build on each other and I want to get the next one right now! Other times, the stories are similar in nature and I start to get a little bored from one to the other if I read them too close together. I like Mavis a lot. I think she's witty and fun and a really good mom, but like many mom's, she does not see herself that way at all. I think the consistent behavior from one book to the next of Mavis putting her own needs aside and being distracted by what feels bright and shiny is enough for one book, but that behavior really should have changed by the end of the second book, and it didn't. Mavis also has a terrible habit of assuming she knows what's going on with the people around her and she is usually wrong. She is a terrible communicator who practices avoidance. I appreciate at the end of the second book that Mavis is focusing more on her self-care in a way that works for her, and I was really proud of her for quitting her job. It seems like she's learning. But, when it really matters and she is possibly in danger, she totally ignores the very obvious signs and ends up in a sticky spot. This makes the timeing of her learning curve feel a little off. However, I love how the author played with the idea of slightly unhinged parents who will do ANYTHING for their children. Mavis is in this group too, but her behavior is more like extending herself farther than her wallet and schedule allow, while the parents who poisoned the soccer coach really took it too far. That particular angle felt satirical and satisfying. We all want the world for our kids, but sometimes we forget that we do them no favors at all if they don't have to earn some things on their own.

Mavis is gonna get herself in some serious trouble!

I didn’t like this one as much as the first and I have a feeling there’s going to be a third. I might listen to it just to see
if Mavis & Cory rekindle things
but the change of and high pitched voices were even more annoying this time around. I figured the plot out maybe about half way through but had to see it through til the end.
