I preferred the first half of the book when he describes the rise of the KKK in Indiana in the 1920s. I found it concerning that it felt a bit familiar to trends today. It also expanded what I knew about the KKK and its origins. The second half is more of a court/true crime drama about the trial to take down a leader of the KKK which I wasn't as interested in. This is very readable and fascinating, and relevant to issues today.

***Spoiler alerts***
Such an important piece of history. Incredibly detailed & researched on the absolute con man who built the KKK and the massive extent of the KKK's power in Indiana. I mean - I didn't expect that guy to be a GOOD GUY but the absolute depravity while people - not just looked the other way - genuinely celebrated him.
Part history lesson, part true crime, part legal drama, it's so messed up you forget you're reading a true story.
The woman (and her family)at the heart of this is a hero. If she had stayed silent or passed away before telling her story - or if he had been found not guilty - history could have been changed in such a frightening way.
