really enjoyed listening to this! i liked the format of focusing on a different “bad gay” in chronological order each chapter, seeing how changing attitudes toward queerness influenced these different people. i’m definitely interested to check out some episodes of the podcast now.
bad gays presents an argument that looking to the mistakes of our villains is just as important as idolizing our heroes, and that solidarity with all oppressed peoples is what will bring the queer movement true progress. each chapter shows this with how a lot of these figures use powerful positions against people of color, people from other nationalities, and other queer people who don’t behave as the “right” type of queer. i feel like a solid thesis isn’t really present throughout the book, but it doesn’t need to be because i was just as interested in the individual lives of each figure.

On paper, this sounded like a really fun and interesting book. Sadly, the execution was poor.
The writing is way too dry and overcomplicated, and this is made even worse in audiobook version.

I love a good nonfiction but this one was just a little too dry in the phrasing for me!
