slow-paced

Someone explain to me how i, a borderline insomniac, dozed off at least 5 times trying to get through this book because it truly alludes me.

In terms of premise this should've been right up my alley. Messy history about unhinged gay people? Two of my favorite things to read about. Yet somehow it didn't hit :/

Learned some cool fun facts but otherwise…. this was meh.
challenging informative slow-paced

At times informative, others wandering, pedantic, and riddled with misspellings and errors, this is a glance into queer history of those “bad” gays who range from being truly abysmal people to mildly awful (mostly meaning a tragically of-their-time character). Having a blindspot of only focusing on Western European and UK figures with some minor exceptions and being overwhelmingly British, the book is nonetheless interesting for any historian.

this combines two of my favourite things - queers and history. absolutely obsessed, this was written for me personally actually.

An interesting selection with an equally interesting premise. I am not sure if it quite hit what I wanted from it, but I still see it as a worthwhile experience. While I enjoyed the sections, they did not all feel as connected to the premise in the same way (a few felt somewhat tacked on or separate from the others). I wanted to be convinced! I see the points (and agree often), but I still don't see an entire failure. I see incredible flaws, but that is not alone in society... On the other hand, I did get some exploration of how radical perception can really be, and how power (and whiteness) has shaped queer history. The social and political backgrounds felt tangled and vital with every new section. It was funny and clear, and I was able to be introduced to new topics for deeper reading.

Been a huge fan of the pod for a long while now, so this was good fun.
I love history, I love gay history, and I particularly love history that I have heard a hundred times before when I’m very stressed. Do tell me about King James I & VI.
Well researched and well put together, very coherent and fast paced. Not by any means a comprehensive historical text, more like character profiles with a central theme. Very good character profiles though.
