Been a huge fan of the pod for a long while now, so this was good fun.
I love history, I love gay history, and I particularly love history that I have heard a hundred times before when I’m very stressed. Do tell me about King James I & VI.
Well researched and well put together, very coherent and fast paced. Not by any means a comprehensive historical text, more like character profiles with a central theme. Very good character profiles though.

Love me a Verso book! I was nervous about a book called Bad Gays, as gay rights are continually under fire in the US I worry about respectability politics in the queer community. I loved that the bad gays on this book are queer people throughout history who instead of solidarity chose to add to the oppression of the queer community or other marginalized communities for their own personal benefit. Unsurprisingly, almost all chapters are about white queer people (shout out to the chapter on Yukio Mishima tho!!) who lean on their white privilege to obscure or diminish their queerness. 3 stars because at certain points I felt the book got lost in the biographical details in a way that obscured their argument and because it did not include my personal favorite bad gay, Michel Foucault. Yes they quote him in the conclusion, but he deserves his own chapter. My favorite chapters were Roger Casement, Margaret Mead, gays of the Third Reich, and Philip Johnson. I would recommend this book for people who liked the movie Bros and were then inspired to learn more about LGBTQ history in a fun way!
Unclear with their definition of "bad", weird selection of people to cover - speaking of: the best thing about this book is its cover, unfortunately you can't judge the book based on it.
Book’s focus on notorious (like morally objectionable) “Bad” individuals throughout history was less compelling then I thought. I may revisit the book later but for now, I’ve so much more on my to-read pile!
