I was excited about the premise of this book:
to discuss the 'failure' of white gay men in liberation movements and ‘its simultaneous appropriation of the bodies and sexualities or racialised people and denial of those people’s full humanity, political participation, and equality.’ However, the book did not deliver on the premise at all. I think there are so many nuances in discussing failure and so to pick bad people of various degrees of 'bad' perhaps feels to have either missed the point, or is simply aiming for shock value. But I wonder- is it really so shocking that white men committed atrocities? Anyways
Really missed the mark, and as it's pop history many portions were not correct. The first chaptedr on Hadrian and the cinaedos fails to acknowledge the power dynamics, the imbalances, the oppression of the lowerclass for the preservation of the civic male elite. Instead it was very much 'their social norms are so weird look at the age gap relationships!!" like....okay
anways totally missed the mark- the book club wasn't happy with this one!

This was a blind date with a book and just couldn't get into it.
