Listened to as an audiobook.

This was, for the most part, a really enjoyable listen and I think the humour was up my street. It was definitely light and a bit silly and quite predictable (I guess almost everything that happened) but I still enjoyed it. However right at the end there's some casual transphobia that's pretty much played off as a joke, and given how much homophobia is a theme through the book and very much addressed and heartfelt, the unaddressed transphobia that didn't add anything to the plot left me with a huge sour taste.

An easy to read and enjoyable rom-com style novel. I enjoyed the story, I was pleased to guess some of the directions the story might take and enjoyed the challenges presented to the protagonist and her journey through quite a few challenges and discovering her strengths.

Fun and insightful.

If framed as a personal growth narrative, then I enjoyed this book's lightheartedness, humor, queerness, and portrayal of the urban/rural cultural divide. Unfortunately, it was marketed as a romance book, and as such it was quite a disappointment. While I could tell which character was being set up to be the protagonist's romantic interest, there was barely any relationship development or even chemistry between them. And waaay too much of the narrative was devoted to the annoying first girlfriend.

I wouldn't have known this was a comedy if it hadn't been explicitly stated in the description. Honestly, it felt more like a tragedy with all the loneliness, heartbreak, and trauma Billie's carrying around, not to mention the satire levels of homophobia.

I usually enjoy the love stories (enemies to lovers can be amazing if done right), but even that was underdeveloped.

I'd normally have given this three stars but deducted a star for the ridiculous levels of transphobic nonsense which really shouldn't have passed the edit phase for a book in 2020.
