This book was so creepy, I really enjoyed it. It was a random available now pick on Libby, and it’s always delightful when they turn out to be good.
Laney owns an island she received in a settlement from the most amicable divorce in history. After her sister’s recent death from cancer, she now has custody of her niece. To make ends meet, she rents the island to vacationers.
She receives a call from her current renters informing her there’s blood in a bedroom closet. This is just another in a string of strange events her renters have recently come across. Laney and her niece rush to the island, which can only be accessed by boat, to find her ex, Kit, and his sister and Laney’s former bestie, Jayla, already there. Her high school frenemy, Sadie, and her gruff cop brother arrive uninvited soon after. The group begins to investigate, and they quickly come across the severed hand of the island’s caretaker. As night falls, they realize they aren’t alone on the island, but they’re not sure if it’s a human or something much darker. Things begin to escalate, and Laney decides the best course of action is to leave and come back with the police the next day. But her boat is missing, along with Sadie. With the only means of leaving the island gone and no way to contact the outside world, they must contend with what is hunting or haunting them, as well as deep buried secrets from the past surfacing and unraveling the thin thread of sanity Laney has held onto since her divorce.
This story has so many levels between the horror of their current situation on the island and the surfacing secrets thought to be long buried. The real craziness starts once the severed hand of the caretaker is found, and things get really out of control. This book kept me engaged from the beginning. Things get creepier and creepier as time goes on, but I think the real horror comes from the secrets that are revealed about the characters. The past is just as haunting as whatever is happening on the island if not more so.
I enjoyed this book so much. It’s such a wild ride. The twisting turns of the plot kept me engaged and guessing throughout the entire book.

I was looking for the book Hemlock, this one came up in my search and the COVER!
Laney owns Hemlock Island after a "pandemic fueled divorce". She rent out her custom built vacation home so that she can afford to keep it. She also has guardianship of her niece after her sister died. Her current renters find blood and claw marks inside a closet (this was never explained, which factored into my rating), and leave in a huff. Laney, with niece in tow, go out to Hemlock Island to investigate.
Her ex-husband, ex sister in law, a friend and friend's cop brother all show up to assist.
There are elements of satanic rituals, supernatural forces, etc. The ending was rough and the explanation just didn't quit fit. The premise is something... or someone... The set up was so good! Execution was just lacking. There were so many things that were left hanging. Very gory.
Despite my rating, I still remember a lot of this book so I guess maybe it was better than I thought it was.

Laney has been renting her vacation home to strangers, a home that is located on an Island that was gifted to her by her ex husband. Yes, that is what I said. Listen is this book a bit far fetched yes, but I would say the same about the TV show Supernatural or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so if you are into those types of shows/genres then you will fully get this book and enjoy just the same. If you are not a fan, don't read this book only to give it a bad review.
I quite enjoyed it but no surprise there, Kelley Armstrong is by far one of my favorite authors, she can right paranormal, fantasy, thrillers and I love it all. Hemlock Island is no exception.
You have crazy things going on in this Island that may seem far fetched but it's what kept me on the edge of my seat. I am not much for gore or similar things of that nature but this was well written that it didn't make me lose my lunch.
My only critic to this is and it's all my personal preference I was not a fan of the ending, I guess I had kind of hoped for it to go a different route but I respect and understand why it went this way.
⭐ Revelation of secrets
⭐ Paranormal
⭐ Thriller
⭐ Great story line
