I like that if felt like a short story collection with the same narrator. Some chapters left me wanting more depth and information, the switch from story to story was sometimes jarring

It was okay. I wish there was more of it as the story felt rushed. The emotional beats don’t really hit due to the pacing and feel more like, “oh, well that happened.” The ensemble cast is also way too bloated, it was hard to keep ready of who was who. The format also made some conversations confusing. I liked the idea of the book, and some of the themes. But I wish the author had spent more time on developing said themes. The book for sure struggles with the little page number. It was alright, but the whole time I was looking forward to it being done.
Graphic: Child abuse, Misogyny, Rape, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Sexual harassment
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Alcoholism, Body shaming, Bullying, Child abuse, Toxic friendship, Alcohol
Minor: Ableism, Dementia

[Read for a Child/YA Lit class]
The story of Esperanza Cordero and her life growing up on Mango street.
This book deals with a lot of relevant struggles and fears that young girls face growing up. It deals with some darker themes though they are not super explicit. The book is written in an almost journal like style, like we’re reading pages out of Esperanza’s diary, with very short chapters dealing with specific events. The author’s style in this book is very poetic and beautiful with a lot of nice prose. It’s a good coming of age story that a lot of women and girls will be able to relate to in some way.
It is written in first person, but as always, that’s just a personal preference of mine and a minor gripe on my part.
Would recommend it, though maybe not for very young readers.

I think this is a beautiful insight of the struggle in poor neighborhoods made human by the author. We're always thinking of vulnerable sector as dangerous and filled with bad people but here's a little reminder that poor neighborhoods have people that strive for greatness and for wellness in their future.
