im not sure about this book - i think it gets a lot of flak because it's written so... messily? the way it jumps from topic to topic to character to character and you get sort of confused on what's happening. and the grammar is like a child's, and the author hardly uses commas, quotation marks - so you don't know whether someone's talking or the author's narrating.

basing off the introduction, it's like the author's just trying to be different and deep and to be honest, im just not into it. the vignettes are too short to properly appreciate and you realize you don't actually care about esperanza. not because of anything she does, but because you hardly know her, and all the stories don't build up this character you get to know and love.

there are so many parallels to "a tree grows in brooklyn" - one of my favorite books, so i think that's why this book grows on me... for a little. and then it's back to thinking that this book is trying way too hard.

for a really short book, this sure took a while to finish, huhu. the bit that resonated with me was only the end - which still doesn't make up for the beginning and the middle.

this book moved me. really truly.
it's beautiful and heartbreaking and hopeful and inspiring.
i love the poetry of Cisneros' words. i love the sincerity, the unapologetic delivery of every sentence; you either know or you don't know.
and it's painful to accept that this book *isn't* for everyone.. i understand it. and what sucks is that these are the same words i'd use to describe the world i knew, the people i grew up knowing, and the struggles that came with it.. and it's understandable that some people simply will not relate to the words on these pages.
i didn't know what i was expecting going into this book but even so, it exceeded every metric i could judge a book on... the most difficult of which is to evoke a sense of belonging, of resonance. this book was published a year before i was born and some how it saw ME.

A sweet story of the world through a child's lens. When we are kids we see things so differently and for me this brought up a lot in my own childhood. From the innocence of the girl waving at the young man while he is being arrested to the constant sexualization of girls, this story encompasses the whole world authentically. The audiobook was delightful and I would recommend this book to everyone, child or adult.

I first read this book 20 years ago and all I remember is feeling represented. I lived some of these stories. Reading it this time around, I truly appreciated the imagery. I could see, feel and smell what Sandra Cisneros was describing.

The original version of the book didn't have the introduction, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it. I laughed and I cried in those 17 short pages. Her parents could be my parents.

I like the vignette style of writing, it's very interesting and leaves many things off the page. A quick, but important and mentally tough read. Everyone has a story in this book.
