I want to hug Borne.

Good, but not great. I think I don't really get Jeff VanderMeer's writing, so I don't really get into the characters or the world as much as I would with other authors.

I like the way Vandermeer can make a scene come to life and the world building here is great. My only struggle was relating with the main characters, I really just had a hard time caring about Rachel and Wick. I was much more interested in Borne, Mord and the Magician who were mostly kept veiled. That certainly seemed intentional and added to their mysticism. The contrast of these characters just existing and the rest of the book's dissection of every detail left the overall narrative feel a bit hollow.

This cannot be the first book from this author you read. You need to know what you are getting in to. I don't want to say you have to read another book just to read this book, but you might. Start with Annihilation, the 1st of the Southern Reach trilogy. If you like the style, then read this one.

Having gone through that, I'm bummed I spent the time on this book. I can see how some may get a lot of "feels" from this book about motherhood, or the shortness of life in general, or how Earth will eventually die anyway, but I after about half-way through, I had a really hard time caring what happened to anyone in the book. Doesn't help that my borrowed ebook from the library expired and I had to wait 2 weeks to get it back and finish the book. In that two weeks while I waited, I looked up the book on Wiki and read how it ends... then I really didn't care, but for some reason I stuck it out and finished it. Will stop with books from this author. Upset at the lost time I could have been reading another book on my nightstand.

I just wanted it to END. The way this author writes makes it not possible to speed read, and every page is a page you have to pay attention to. adventurous dark hopeful mysterious sad fast-paced
