3.5 stars but rounding up because the idea of a duke of Boston is just too fun.

What a fun, gossipy, romp of a read. I loved reading about an alternative American reality that had a monarchy rather than a democratic republic. To me, this is the very definition of fun fiction- exploring options and places just to see how they "feel."
The characters came across as very young, dramatic, and a tiny bit flat. I am hopeful the second book in this series flushes everyone out a bit more and adds some depth. I am also hopeful that Daphne gets a smack down, Nina gets a backbone, Samantha gets a grip, and Beatrice gets a therapist.
We'll see what happens.

There were a few things I didn’t like about this book, but many things I loved! Focusing on four women with vastly different experiences was such an interesting way to talk the story. It was also one of the easiest books to start that I ever read! And once I started, i couldn’t stop reading. I have seen complaints of people not liking Daphne, but I think that’s the point. It’s fun to occasionally hear from an antagonist. I also think the book did a fairly good job of balancing fun and funny moments, drama, and seriousness. For the most part it was lighthearted, but I did get teary-eyed a few times. I would definitely recommend, such a cool concept!

I really wanted to enjoy this, but I couldn't find any connection to the characters and gave up.

I liked American Royals, I did not love it. I wanted more. More politics, more Bee, more Sam, more Connor, more Teddy. I also wanted less. Less Daphne. Less Daphne. Less Daphne. I really cringed through her parts as she is 17 (which seems a little young to be plotting for a crown) and a total mean girl with 0 redeeming qualities.

I LOVED the concept of this book! If Washington were to be King - love alternate histories and this was one reason I really wanted to read this book. I just wish there were more details - I loved the little insights into the Dukes’ territories and maybe it would have been nice to have a map. I’m a total sucker for #mapsinbooks

I knew I would like this YA realistic fiction book but I didn’t know I would love it so much, finishing the audiobook in two days!
