I think if I didn't remember this as one of my least favorite of the series I would have gotten thru it much more quickly. it's really not that bad, probably at least as good as the first book. I'm seeing a lot more little bits that make me think the author knows a lot of the noir trope sexism the main character exhibits is bad, although there's enough in there to make me think some of it is good ol' fashioned American women-hating. really excited to move on to the 4th book — I think I read this one at least a dozen times thru high-school and college.

This is the book where the series really takes off for me- it shifts from a fun time to a seriously good read that gets my feels going, too. It introduces probably two of my favorite side characters in Michael Carpenter and Thomas Raith. It kicks off a major arc for the next several books, it shows that Harry, while extremely flawed, truly is a good man and he acts on his principles, no matter the consequences. It takes us into the Nevernever the first time, and we finally get to meet Harry's wicked faerie Godmother, Lea, who is also fantastic, as well. All in all, it's an excellent read and it has me teary-eyed by the end. And no matter how many times I've read it, I just can't put it down.

You can see how the writer in this books leaves the more traditional detective style slowly behind him and start to play more with his writing style.
