I really wanted to love this book. A Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920’s Shanghai? Hell yeah! Unfortunately this book just... didn’t do it for me. I appreciated the ways the author adapted the source material—particularly with the character of Paul (Paris) and the way the sleeping potion was used. The premise was so exciting but the writing fell flat; too much exposition throughout that the pacing dragged (until the end, which was better). The characters didn’t come to life for me and there were multiple events that just felt too convenient and therefore unbelievable. I don’t feel compelled to read the sequel at all, unfortunately.

My favorite part of the book is Juliette. I like her cruelty and ruthlessness. In all honesty I think the other characters lack a little something. They’re all in gangs, but for some reason they don’t have the same cut throat behavior. I also think this book is falsely branded as Romeo and Juliet . I only say this because the author doesn’t show Roma and Juliette actually falling in love. Instead we get references to their childhood love than the big reveal that they still love each other. I wanted to see the pining and the forbidden tension and the rendezvous. The plot is just interesting enough for me not to drop it. It’s boring in the beginning and the end. The middle is ok. I absolutely love the description of shanghai, made ugly and beautiful. I don’t think I will read the next book.

EDIT:
Monkey covering eyes emoji. I read the wrong book of the same title. Luckily I never talk at book club anyways. But damn was that a fumble. I read this book for nothing!
Tell me why my LGBT+ book club of adults read this book?? Yeah there is a character who is transgender for about two paragraphs, and a suggested gay romance in the background, but this is a straight love story!! I don't read straight love stories!! :/
