Excellent book that I legit had trouble putting down at times.

Despite being set in a space traveling, galactic setting the entire book takes place on one planet. At times it feels more like a Jack Ryan novel than a sci-fi, and that is part of what makes it so great. Its an excellent spy/conspiracy thriller in a sci-fi setting.

This one was a let down for me after the previous entry in the series. It is without the sense of discovery and mystery, instead basically a bunch of politics and combat. Lot's of sci-fi readers will probably still enjoy it, but it's just not for me.

I sort of “accidentally” ended up rereading the entire Vatta’s War series, as well as Cold Welcome before picking this up finally. I’m glad I did as I definitely picked up some things in CW and this that I probably would have missed otherwise (and definitely did the first time around in the case of Cold Welcome). I really do love this universe and Moon’s military sci-fi epics.

Where the War series is more space opera thriller, this is all planetary, and we do get a change of pace because of it. Into The Fire still gets some seriously fast paced moments though, as the Vatta’s come under attack again, and as they struggle to figure out what happened.

I really like the conspiracy nature, and how Grace’s long hinted at past comes into it all. I don’t necessarily love some of how that plays out in terms of revenge and grudge holding, but that’s a me thing - it’s my least favourite trope!

I also found some of what the bad guys get up to a little outlandish, but that is what makes a thriller fun occasionally ;)

I think this is the end of the Vatta’s Peace arc, but I’m not certain and it doesn’t seem to say anywhere online that I can see. It does tie it off but there’s always room for more, so I have hope!

I think my love for the series kept me going with this one. There are still tense things happening and plots trying to figure out who the bad guys are...there were so many things that frustrated me in this one. The escape/rescue planning was my favorite part of this one, but I don't understand so,e of the decisions of both Ky AND Grace. Plus, so much of the end felt oddly summarized. It felt...rushed? I don't know. Not one of her best books, but that won't stop me from reading more if she writes them.

Science Fiction is our view into the future. Into the Fire by Elizabeth Moon delivers an exciting story along with this future view. Ky Vatta has returned home with evidence of a vast conspiracy that threatens her family business Vatta Enterprises (her cousin Stella is CEO) and her home Slotter Key (her great-aunt Grace is Rector of Defense). Even with control of all these resources, the conspirators seem to have the upper hand.

This is an expensive book. Even though it’s over 450 pages, it doesn’t last long and might also cost you sleep. The women are in charge and take charge, but they are not typical macho characters simply with women’s names, nor are they stereotypical women just dressed in uniforms. The characters are complex, complete, and the future.

Good followup and a solid ending. This one had some wavery bits especially early on in which the author's handling of some of the characters, especially the relationships with Stella just seemed off. But it evened out and didn't get in the way of the story. Basically a military space intrigue though this one is set almost completely on the planet. Strong female characters but all with flaws. Perhaps bits of it are a little more obvious and pat than I'd like. And perhaps more actual history would make the whole thing more believable. So other of the author's books are better - but I'm glad she put out another one. 3.5 of 5.

I enjoyed this one more than the first book in the series, though I kind of wanted to punch Stella, and it bugged me that Kai and Stella never talked about why they rub each other the wrong way like sisters. I think that the learning about the history of the planet fleshed out the world-building, and I enjoyed seeing Kai take charge again.
