I felt like the voice was disorienting between chapters— we start with a funny, zippy narrative but then move into these sweeping, emotional lyric essays toward the end. i really liked the slow, lyrical chapters though.

Hilarious & excruciating

As funny as it is beautiful and painful. Lockwood is exacting and forgiving all at once, in her way, and I loved it.

“Priestdaddy” by Patricia Lockwood is a funny experience. I liked best the chapter about learning to sing, which wound up being the book’s turning point.

Patricia Lockwood is one of my favorite poets, and I saw a lot in this memoir that reminded me of her poetry. I think she sometimes veers toward focusing on the absurd or the humorous (which is sometimes good) and avoids lingering in places that are very serious and, if touched on just a bit longer, could be incredibly moving. That being said, I laughed out loud multiple times and really appreciated, in particular, her critiques of the church.
