Very good. Subtle undertone of the fairytale with everything else different. Really good new twists to old known fairytales.
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought it was just going to be another mediocre YA fantasy/fairy tale, but it ended up having a twist or two that I did not expect. It kind of reminded me of Once Upon a Time (tv show) crossed with Divergent. I did not get Sleeping Beauty vibes at all, but it was still an enjoyable story and I liked the world made up of fractured fairy tale kingdoms that disrupted modern society. I wish the next books continued Asher and Jade's story, but it sounds like they are standalones from various kingdoms across the world. I still will likely pick up others in the series when I'm looking for a light, easy read.

3.5/5 stars.
I was given a free copy of this book for review by NetGalley.
This was an interesting mix of fantasy and alternate reality. As a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty, it gets bonus points for originality. I really enjoyed the unique world that Davis envisioned, but I wish we had gotten a more in-depth backstory on how the magic works, and how the worlds collided. We got just a smidgen- just enough to function as a bare-bones explanation for the characters, but not enough to satisfy me as a reader. Maybe this will be explored more in further books, since the end clearly set it up for a sequel. Overall, it was an entertaining read, though at times a bit predictable (hard to avoid when you're retelling a famous story).

This is an interesting version of a fairy tale.
The magic world and the "real" world came together with a devastating earthquake. Parts of the magical world fell to earth. Queens, Kings, Princes, and Princesses with magical powers starting taking over different parts of the world. In NYC, it was Queen Deirdre who took the emotions, feelings, and memories of all of her subjects. Jade was one of the first people entranced by the queen.
Kind of a Snow White story, but unusual twists.

I found it weird how self-aware the MC was about the main conflict--her lack of feelings. It killed the tension for me.
I listened to this as an audiobook and it was effortless to read (or listen in this case). The narrator made the book and brought it to life. It was so easy, easy to get into, easy to keep listening and easy to get behind all the characters.
I likes the set up of the story and found the plot was one to instantly get me hooked. There’s rebels rising up against the cold hearted queen, a soldier who is the only woman amongst her ranks and set to a task to infiltrate the enemy. There’s magic, drama and romance. Couldn’t want for more really!
The storyline was steady and entertaining I found. It was a satisfying story, I loved the start, introducing me to the world and smiled at the ending and enjoyed the ride in between.

After the earthquake that destroyed New York city and introduced magic to the world, preteen Jade is trained as a soldier or guard for the new Queen. Fully committed to the new order, she steels her heart to be as cold as the people she works with. Her heart, her emotions are asleep. But Jade has a redeeming feature; she likes to explore and investigate. An explosion at one of NYC’s entrances doesn’t even cause her leader to care, but Jade decides on her own to investigate, where she finds the missing prince.
The queen wants the prince returned. The queen asks Jade to get captured and bring the prince back. It would sound simple, if Jade could remain cold and calculating about her mission. Ah, therein lies the twist.
Did I enjoy the novel? I like the post-apocalytic atmosphere, but there seemed to be no real magic. Everything can be explained logically. The plot was slowly-paced, so action buffs might get bored. The romance was slow to develop, so romance buffs would be disappointed. But the poetic descriptions of the world reminded me of Patricia McKillip’s writing, and I love a nicely-phrased sentence.
I think the prequel, Frost, is paced better, but if you like to see, feel, and touch the world around you, this novel satisfies.

This twist on the classic tale of sleeping beauty was very intriguing. The main character is a complete badass being the only girl on the Royal guard. Only thing that bothered me was Jade and Asher's insta love. Other than that the world described was very vivid and the writing flowed well. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a novel that has the elements of a fairy-tale added to a "modern world". I look forward to reading the next instalment to see how the story progresses.
