I came across this book while working in India. I made a mental note to get it one day and read it. Since the book does not have a digital copy, it took me longer to get a physical copy and read it but now I finally manage to do it and it was worth it. Crucial conversations are conversations we all go through but not everyone is good at handle them. I identified my weak spots when having a conversation where stakes are high and things can go south rapidly, the book reinforce what I thought and it opened up a whole new dimension on how to identify, process and react to crucial conversations. I fully enjoyed the book and I think is a great tool to improve the way to handle delicate conversations with other people.

This took me like 9 months to finish because I suck at reading non-fiction, but it was definitely worth the effort. It presents a framework of genuinely useful tools for communicating well, from the self-reflection needed to figure out what you actually want to communicate, all the way to how to listen well and ask meaningful questions to bring others into dialogue. I've already been using some of the principles with success with my roommates, my family, and at work.
I found the insights that the authors presented to be quite perceptive and discerning, and I appreciated the grace with which they encourage you to improve your communication skills - "Don't overwhelm yourself by insisting that you think and act this clearly and professionally during every heated and emotional conversation. Merely consider whether you could think a little more clearly during a few crucial conversations."
This book has already been, and I believe will continue to be very useful for me, and I would absolutely recommend it.

Perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes, gives dangerous advice on sexual harassment handling. Might be triggering for people who experienced workplace harassment or sexism.
3.5 stars
This book started slow. Then it picked up with some great advice. Then it started to drag again.
Long story short.... there is some great advice in this book. To capitalize on it, you need to think of ways to apply it in your daily life. You also need to carve out a good amount of time to read this. At times it drones on. I've read a few other career books and the better ones condense the information into smaller, more manageable chapters. I'd like to see this book rewritten for today's audience. (In other words, for people who only have 10 minutes a day for themselves)
