This was such a fun and spicy twist on Beauty and the Beast! I loved the bodyguard trope and that the love interest was actually 30. The romance was steamy, and the tension between Daemon and Alix really worked. It was also a nice palette cleanser between heavier reads.
That said, the pacing dragged a bit in places, and I definitely wanted more world-building to fully sink into the fantasy setting. Still, it was an enjoyable and easy read.

I just loved this. It was Beauty and the Beast inspired but not in your face about it. The storyline fit but half the time I would forget about that aspect and be like oooh what will happen next

There's a LOT going on in this book for a standalone to carry. This is a beauty and the beast retelling...ish. [SPOILER-ADJACENT: Belle escaped the Beast 60 years ago but now her granddaughter, Alix, and Belle's cat, Sushi, are kidnapped when mistaken for Belle and brought back to wed the Beast.] I loved the tension between the FMC and MMC, I loved that the bad guy is bad. Fairytale retellings are my jam, and BATB is one of my favorites. I found the ending to be predicable, both the plot against the main antagonist and the wrap up, but it was the ending I wanted, so I'm not truly complaining. This was also another example of a MMC being portrayed as a "bad guy" but he's really not. More has morally-gray aesthetic. Which is also fine! Just feeling like I'm seeing that more and more lately. Anyways love Kate King's standalones.
