I don’t remember the last time I connected with an fmc this much. At 30, she wasn’t the typical age of romantasy heroines, and I loved that. And because it’s a portal fantasy, Alix could make as many real world jokes and references as she wanted because she was just a girl from our world who ended up in the world of the fae. Her age and personality, both humour and her tendencies as a people pleaser, resonated with me so much. Alix is going to forever hold a special place in my heart.
Alix wasn’t the only character I loved in this book. Daemon was a perfect overprotective fae male in the best way. When do we not love a man that absolutely worships the ground our fmc walks on? He does that and more. He is the perfect match for Alix to heal from her previous relationship and learn who she is apart from someone else. He challenged her, and she challenged him in return.
This story was also full of great side characters. While I like the way Daemon and Alix’s story wrapped up, I’m incredibly hopeful for more stories in this world about some of these side characters. We got hints at who they are, and I’m dying to know more. If I don’t get an Odessa/Kastian book I will actually riot.
From start to finish this book had me so hooked. I’m a sucker for a beauty and the beast retelling, and adding Anastasia in as well spiced it up in a new and exciting way. Add in that it’s a portal fantasy instead of being solely set in another world, and we get a unique, entertaining, and binge worthy story readers are sure to relate to. I can’t wait to read more of Kate’s work!

I LOVE THIS BOOK. I HAVE ALREADY READ IT 4 TIMES. I love the Beauty and the Beast/Anastasia crossover. They are two of my favorite animated movies. You immediately fall in love with Daemon and Alix, along with the side characters of the story. The story moves along at a great pace and you are constantly saying “one more chapter”. There are some great breadcrumbs for the side characters in setting up their stories for the future. The spice is great and just the right amount for the story. I just adore this story and everything about it and can’t stop recommending it to people.

First off, thank you for writing a romantasy book that has a grown-ass woman as the FMC! That's an instant win in my books, but there was so much more to this book to love. Alix is plucked from her disasterous normal life and dropped into a Fae world of curses and intrigue, and she may be the key to saving all of them. While somewhat predictable at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey on every single page. I love Kate's writing style, and this book is no exception. It was well-paced, and I felt like we got to know our characters (and this new world) well throughout the book. This book is heavily inspired by Beauty & the Beast and Anastasia (two of my personal favourites), and I loved all the little nods to them. This was a great start to a (hopefully) long romantasy series!

The way this book hooked me from the very beginning. I didn’t have a hard time getting into the fantasy world at all. Alix and Daemon were everything! If you are looking for a Beauty and The Beast modern retelling with a touch of Anastasia, then you need this book.
Alix is the granddaughter to Isabelle(Belle), who is a worldwide famous fantasy author. Everyone loves her fairytale book about a magical world and a handsome king. But what Alix, and everyone else doesn’t know, this fairytale is true. When Alix’s life is in a downward spiral, she goes out to her grandmothers place to take a break and figure out what to do with the house. This is where she meta Daemon and then her life gets turned even more upside down.
Daemon has been in prison for most of his life and has come to the point where he knows he will never see the light of day ever again and this prison is where he will die. That is til the King gives him a chance at his old life. All he has to do is bring Belle back to the King. Sounds easy right? Well it has been over 60 years since she has been to their world. So when he meets a beautiful woman at the bar and starts talking with her to get answers on where he might find this Belle, he finds something and someone else.
The way these characters and this world just sucked me in was amazing! I loved their story and how they both finally got their HEA. Definitely a Top Read of 2025!!
