Liked the political aspect of the book. It didn't even really need a romance plot. Although I enjoyed the quicker pace, I did think some relationships needed expanding upon and a few more filler chapters to really feel the emotional ties of Io to the other characters. The plot was also a bit too predictable but good for a YA

One of my pet peeves in fantasy books is when real-world events, politics or hot issues are included with no context or grounding in a fictional world, and this book falls into that trap:
Abortions are never mentioned in this book aside from this moment. It isn't relevant to the plot, characters or world. The author forced anti-abortion opinions into their fantasy world, simply to have a character earn social kudos by being pro-abortion??
It's incredibly jarring and doesn't blend into this world or story. A bizarre choice. Otherwise, this is a decent story.
"My father's beliefs," Edei went on, "are part of the reason we had to leave Sumi. His sect wanted Samiya to stop performing abortions. She refused."

i have deeply mixed feelings..
this book was so so good. the only reason it’s 4 stars rather than 5 is because there was so much information dumping and random like…info about the world it was so confusing and just kind of an overload to the point I was really confused at moments. Aside from that, the book was amazing. I felt so close to Io and Edei, I was rooting for them the entire time and I love them so so much. I love the sister dynamic and the way the threads work and everything. Aside from the info dumping, the book was executed so well and im so excited for the next book
