Wow, what a rollercoaster that was…

Side note: It’s not a focal plot point by any means, but I do feel as though the fleeting references to SA and this sensitive subject matter in general was quite poorly addressed and under recognised in this novel, which I did find bothersome.

Did you know that Melbourne is also the name of a city in Florida, not just the second most populated city in Australia? I learnt this when June was bemoaning how its so boring she's just from Melbourne when the worldly Athena Liu grew up in Sydney and I got confused because I was thinking they spent their childhood in the same place.

Yellowface is good as a skewering of the publishing industry and cultural appropriation - the ending loses me as it goes more into being a thriller and invoking unreality

Yes, I also fell into Booktok's hold. R.F. Kuang has been recommended to me a thousand and one times. Additionally, I just finished my book publishing master's. Therefore, this book was an obvious pick to start with.

If you think you know how the plot is going to develop... no you don't. This read had me hooked in the weirdest way possible. I felt so much curiosity for a character I did not like, and she kept me reeled in. Unlikable main characters have become the IT girls for contemporary fiction, and tbh I get why. Reading about someone mean, someone bad, someone unethical feels compelling. You aren't rooting for them, but you want to know how their story, their drama, ends.

'Yellowface' starts being a satire. Along the way it becomes a psychological thriller. I'm actually not sure when this switch happened, but the fact that I can't pinpoint it, makes me believe excellent writing is involved. The only reason why this book didn't get 5 stars from me, is because the plot seemed a bit banal compared to what I thought it was going to be. Maybe 'the hype' influenced my final opinion of the book, but I still think it's a great novel to read.

Would definitely recommend.
