Set in a world where plague has killed 6 million people, and where healers were blamed and persecuted, Avry is one of only a few left, and she's been hiding for years. In this world, healers can't just zap someone; they have limits. Avry has to take on the sickness or injury, leaving her patient healed but enduring the problem herself until her fast-recovering body has taken care of it. Unable to resist helping a dying child with pneumonia, she's betrayed for gold, imprisoned and sentenced to death by Tohon's orders... until an offer is made. Now she has to decide who to trust as well as who to heal, because thousands of lives may depend upon her choices.
I really enjoyed this book! I wasn't sure if I would but decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. Each character in the book is well-developed and unique. They all have flaws and there were moments where I wanted to hate almost all of them, yet despite their flaws could also relate to most of them.
The universe this is set in reminds me in some ways of other books (like the Seven Realms/Demon King series) but has unique features that make it stand out. Death Lilys are especially fascinating, especially as we learn more about them as the book progresses. I hope more mysteries will be unraveled in the next book in the series. Magic is also handled differently than in other books I've read. The way mages can use their powers are unique and the way they can bind together feels unique as well

Touch of Power is the last book I have read in 2011 and I am delighted to report it was a doozy. The new series featuring Healer Avry shares lots of the best traits with both the Yelena and Opal series, namely a feisty heroine, a fascinating world and a thrilling plot arc. Avry is put in some rather horrific situations and handles it all with grace and cool, her determination to do good driving her forward. The hero proves he has hidden depths and the romance develops beautifully over the course of the book. And the villain is suitably deranged, promising some tricky times ahead for Avry, Kerrick and the boys.
My one criticism? The little note at the end of the book that says "Look out for more of Avry's adventures, coming in 2013!" 2013?! WHAT?! B-b-but it's still 2011 for six or so hours... oy.

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the sequel.
I still think the Poison Study series was just a little better (it had more romance), but this was still really good.

'You mean I'm not omnipotent?'
'You're not even semi-potent.'
'Is that even a word?' Kerrick asked.
'He probably means you're impotent,' I offered.
Things like that is why I liked this book. There's some funny banter, the main character has a lot of depth, and the premise of healers and peace/death lilies is very unique. This is another case of don't judge a book by it's terrible cover. However, I do wish Tohon had been a little more villainous and that the ending wasn't so rushed. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Although there was a lot of traveling (and with a lot, I mean a LOT), I still liked it. There was always something going on, whether it was us getting to know the characters better, or them running from something. Kinda liked the plot, didn’t expect it, really didn’t see where it was going & am going to read the other books for sure. Not gonna lie, cried a little bit.

Spoilers ahead!!
This is the first book by Maria V Snyder that I am reading and I loved it. Ooooh I knew Sepp was a bad guy the moment I met him and his attitude. Can I kill Tohon for these guys? The saddest part of the whole book is Flea's death.
The only reason this books didn't get the full 5 stars is because there wasn't much world building. You get the general idea of how there were 15 realms in a post plague ridden world. But that's about it.
Overall it was enjoyable with a strong female character that was close to be killed only to have a reason to survive now. The guys were amazing. Belen is my favorite.
Onto book 2.

Woooow. This book was fantastic. I want to cry in frustration. That's how much I love it. I don't know what it is with Maria V Snyder's books, but I read them so quickly! I love how different this book was from Poison Study. It was different, but it was also similar as in the world and stuff.I have been wanting to pick this book up because I had heard many amazing things about it, and I am so glad I did! This is exactly the type of book that I love to read. This type of fantasy!
I fell in love with the characters! I loved kick-ass Avry, and I loooved the other members of the gang, except for Kerrick, at the start. I thought that he was a total douche bag to Avry, and it was so clear that they had sexual tension. I just wanted to slap him. Belen was a sweetheart too and I felt so bad for him when he found out that his sister was dead. I actually liked Tohon at first, but then he turned out to be a crazy psychopath, I was like "nevermind...."
The plot is also amazing. The only complaint I have is that the climax was a bit lacking. It didn't feel like an epic ending or anything. But that's okay because it was an epic book. I love Snyder's writing so much. I just can never get enough of her books. I will go out tomorrow and buy the second book immediately!
