Juvenile, overly romantic, and highly predictable. But still a fun read. The language was oscillating between arcane and current lingo. The plot was flimsy at best. And the villain was rather flat in character. Probably won't go far in this series.
When I picked up TOUCH OF POWER last night my plan was to read for a couple hours and then go to sleep. Well you know what they say about the best laid plans...
Avry is character that immediately draws the reader into her story. She is tender and caring along with being independent and incredibly stubborn. When she adopted the band of rogues, I found myself doing the same. As things get tense in the tale, I would find myself holding my breathe and reading on.
As you can imagine, I love to read however it isn't very often that I find myself so engrossed in a book that the real world recedes. I just wish that my humble writing skills were up to par when it comes to describing TOUCH OF POWER. My best recommendation is to grab this book for yourself. I will say however that it is the best fantasy book that I have had the pleasure of reading for quite a long time.
I rate this book a 5 and recommend it to readers who love a good fantasy with a heroine who it is easy to fall in love with.
*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.

Fantastic Read! At least as fascinating as her Study series, if not more. A fantastical world full of adventure, heartache and intrigue. Definitly worth reading and waiting for the next installment.
I kind of want to read it again... ugh!

My Rating: 3.5
This book was a tiny bit of a let down for me. Having read a few of Maria V. Synder previous works, I was going into this all hype and ready. Seriously...the book started so good, I barely had time to even put an update. I was like:

As I got further into the read the storyline began to drag and bored me to death. What saved this read was that I love Ms. Snyder style of writing and I knew if I soilder through I would definitely get to the pot of goal, at the end of the rainbow.
The characters ( most of them, Kerrick and Belen ) were great and I can say that I like them and even manage to connect with them at different levels. I just found the storyline too predictable and drawn out at times and I'm also kinda of fed-up with the protagonist being the "last" of a particular people and the only hope to save everybody. It literally had me *RollsEyes* and:

It should be noted that my displeasure could also be related to the fact, that I ran out of coffee/tea *Screams* and barely could concentrate...who really knows. Whatever the reason, It has in no way affected my better judgement as I will be continuing this trilogy, because as I've mentioned before, I happen to love this authors writing style and she usually hits the bullseye mark for me.

Maria is my absolute favourite author. I have read this book and many of her others many times. They never get old and I always find new things each time I re-read them.
This first Healer book is one of my favourites because I get to fall in love with the characters all over once again. I love that this book has a wonderful fantasy aspect to it, but the world created isn't super complicated. The character development as always is spectacular and you get sucked in right from the first page!
I recommend Maria's books to all my friends when they are looking for a new read, and so far I have never heard anyone who was disappointed!

This book is amazing. Truly amazing. I gladly give it five stars, and wish I could give it many, many more. This book is...is...amazing!!! (Okay, that sounded dull. Amazing, amazing, amazing. But that's all I can describe it with!)
Everything from the characters (by the time the book was finished, I was just as much in love with Kerrick as Avry), to the villains (nasty Tohon! nasty Tohon! nasty Tohon! *repeat this three times every morning, noon, and night*), to the awesome Fifteen Realms (if they hadn't been struck with the plague, I would totally want to live there!), this book was stunning. There. A different word than amazing.
I'm excited to find out what happens next in the series. Oh, agonizing wait!!! (Luckily 2012 will be plenty exciting, otherwise I'd have a nervous breakdown waiting for the release of Scent of Magic!)

Some of the best fantasy worlds take their lead from reality. Avry’s world has suffered from a plague. A plague that may have been set out into the world by man. Their situation is familiar to the medieval world’s Bubonic Plague. But it also made me think of today and all our genetic, pharmacy and military tinkering. A new plague could be accidentally unleashed on the public. How would we react?
In the Fifteen Realms, the Healers and creators of the plague are hunted and exterminated. Avry is the last of her kind. And as a mother, she has one of the best powers. One that I never would have thought of. She can take the pain, hurt and sickness from anyone. She takes on their pain and wounds. Her body heals faster, so she can recover faster from things that might kill others. But only the joy of healing takes away the very real pain she feels. The Fifteen Realms is very medieval in nature with the addition of various magic users like Avry. Most magic is based on either the elements and nature or life and death magic.
I settled into this world all nice and cozy. This series has some similarities to SNYDER’s Study series. But those similarities are things that I LOVE in most things I read. Strong women and the men that fall in love with them, snarky humor filled dialogue, relationship building, worlds that unfold, adventure, and a cast of fleshed out fabulous secondary characters. It has it all and I mean all. SNYDER writes the best characters. Everything they say and do is perfection. It flows and there is never a moment where it doesn’t feel authentic to the character or the story nor is ever forced or lacking. Just pure brilliance in storytelling.
TOUCH OF POWER is full of adventure and intrigue as Avry, Kerrick and his band of merry men traipse across the realms trying to save Ryne so he can defeat the dastardly maniacal Tohon. The cherry on top was the push-pull between Avry and Kerrick. It had me grinning like a school girl throughout. I couldn’t get enough and was happy to have the rest of the series on hand.

I quite liked this one - quick read, interesting likable characters, good worldbuilding, thought-out magic system. For someone reason it wasn't quite . . . transcendent? Like I'm not sure how well I'll remember it over time - nothing stood out particularly. Just solid genre work. I would actually call it more of a 3.5, but that is not an option.
Going to try more of this author's work and see what I think.
