This dark little mermaid retelling is part of a set of standalone book series!! I cannot wait for what Liesl has in store for her next book!!

I fell in love with Enna and Soren right away! Their chemistry was on point and the spice was

For my second retelling of The Little Mermaid this year, I read Of Song And Scepter. I ran to sign up for this ARC because the idea of a stabby version of the Little Mermaid was everything, and it lived up to that hype.

Enna is a badass and she does what she needs to do in order to survive (and deal with her blood oath) but when she has to pretend to be someone she's not and deny her own feelings it becomes a bit too much. Soren was my favorite. He was strong, clear about what he wanted, and unwilling to settle for less than love.

There was a bit of world building in the beginning, but it picked up pace quickly, and once Soren and Enna were together in more scenes, it was just perfect. If you like mermaids, mythical beings, or just wish Ariel was a little more stabby, pick up this one!

Fine if you want to switch off your brain and just binge a book.
But for me it's pretty forgettable and all the characters/relationships felt undercooked. There was potential in the story but in its execution it just felt like a string of unconnected tropes.

Loved this book, the story between Enna and Soren is amazing, and the strength of character Enna displays is stunning. The Ariel retelling moment and the nods to The Little Mermaid were amazing, and I can’t wait for the next book coming out🤍

If you hated the Little Mermaid with the shallow prince who falls for beauty and wanted to scream at Ariel for giving up her voice and fins for “love”, this is for you!!

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5,

“There is nowhere you can go that I will not find you, Wicked. Even if you flee the depths of the sea, I will follow.”

Short Synopis:
Enna made a blood oath when she was 10 years old, and has spent the rest of her life killing sirens and mermaids to complete her oath. But when she’s ordered to kill the Abyssal princess and pretend to be a handmaiden for the false princess, things get tricky…especially when the prince starts to fall for her and not his betrothed.

My thoughts:
I’ve been craving a mermaid romantasy for awhile now. (I think in all my fantasy books, I’ve only read one other.) It was fun read filled with all my favorite things: love, morally grey characters, witty banter and some stabbing.

It’s just a fantastic debut and I’m excited to read the rest of the series. (It’s a series of standalones!)

This is my first foray into little mermaid retelling-ish fantasy, but it surely won’t be my last. Liesl West is a genius and while it took me a while to get into the book (fantasy books are all like that for me, I have to really wrap my head around the world building and who the characters are), I was obsessed with the double crossing and slow burn of this book. Enna and Soren are made for each other, and I loved watching Enna change from a ruthless death dweller into a true fairytale princess.
