The women in Greek mythology are often featured in the margins of their own stories as peripheral characters. Natalie Haynes does an amazing job of telling their stories and better introducing you to their complexities and nuanced points of view. This is a fantastic read for anyone interested in the female perspective in Greek Mythology and the different versions of those same tales that history has written and rewritten (or even erased). These women shouldn’t be forgotten or disregarded as one dimensional characters in their own narratives, and Pandora’s Jar helps to keep their stories alive.

“Their stories should be read, seen, heard in all their difficult, messy, murderous detail. They aren't simple, because nothing interesting is simple.

We do not live in a world of heroes and villains, and if we believe we do, we should really consider the possibility that we haven't thought about things properly. We cannot hope to make sense of our stories or ourselves (myths are a mirror of us, after all) if we refuse to look at half of the picture. Or - worse - don't even notice half of it is missing.”

I LOVED it!! Its accessible writing style made it a pleasant and easy read. Nathalie puts the incredible women from Greek myths in the context and explore why they might be perceived as good/bad. There are references to both ancient and modern reception, which added depth and intrigue to the narrative. As someone from Japan, I was shocked to learn I had missed Ninagawa's rendition of Medea. I must get the DVD. Its inclusion of lesser-known anecdotes, like the amusing tale of Achilles' fatal punch, added an unexpected layer of humour. It certainly proved enlightening, filling gaps in my knowledge and leaving me eager to further explore myth retellings in the future.
