It was just as Dark and Magical as the Movie, but with more scenes and details. I honestly loved this book, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the remainder of the series!

This is, without question, my absolute favorite children’s classic. Everything about this book feels like magic. The world is wildly imaginative, the characters are rich, funny, and instantly lovable, and the setting is so vivid that it’s impossible not to get pulled in. The world-building is phenomenal – every detail, from the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, adds to the whimsical charm of Oz.
The dialogue is witty, clever, and filled with a kind of timeless humor that genuinely made me laugh out loud in almost every chapter. I grew up watching the movie adaptation and always found it fascinating as a child, but reading the original book as an adult was just as enchanting, if not more. The jokes and character dynamics land beautifully for adult readers too.
I’m honestly torn when it comes to picking a favorite character. I go back and forth between the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman, but then I think of how brief the actual encounter with the Wizard is, and how despite that, he sits at the very core of the story. His made-up importance, and the way he represents illusion and authority, was such a brilliant plot twist and adds a powerful layer to the book’s moral core.
Everything about this book is perfection. It’s one of the few children’s classics I would happily read and re-read forever. The themes and takeaways – courage, intelligence, love, and the importance of believing in yourself – are timeless and ever-relevant.
And I must mention Dorothy: such a grounded, logical, and emotionally intelligent child. Unlike many child protagonists in other classics, she wasn’t clueless or irritating – she was kind, caring, and consistently thoughtful. Interestingly, the character development in this book wasn’t about her at all – it was about her companions. Dorothy served as the heart of the journey, the steady presence who helped others find what they didn’t know they already had. Also, every time she begged people to stop saying she killed or murdered the Wicked Witch, I laughed so hard. So, so funny. Her reactions felt so real and added a wonderfully human layer to all the absurdity around her.
