The Five Dragons or noble families, have split up the moon amongst themselves. The main family in the narrative is the house Corta, made up of former Brazilians.
Really really in depth space opera here. Lots of fun intrigue, power plays, action scenes, and attempted/successful assassinations. I did dock it a star because it’s so much like Dune there are like full analogs of like the Baron, Duke Leto, and maybe even Paul, that it was a bit distracting to me. But overall it was an excellent book and I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Warring dynastic families. Juicy interpersonal drama. Unique libertarian-inspired legal system. Society on the moon. Mild political intrigue. If that sounds fun, this book may be for you
I couldn't stop listening to this book down, it was so engaging. The dynastic families of the moon control most of society, there is a sprawling cast of characters. Although it took a bit to learn everyone, it was worth the effort. I would describe this as like Game of Thrones on the moon, but much more soapy. I was genuinely shocked by some of the plot twists and the ending.
On the moon, there is no law except contract law. Everything is negotiable, nothing is illegal. This creates a really interesting libertarian society, which McDonald utilizes to the fullest extent possible. He does an excellent job of making the world-building consistent and making it part of the whole story and the character's lives. We also get to see the impacts of this on the limited political system and lunar development corporation that tries to rule the moon.
Overall I very much enjoyed the book, my one complaint is that the story sometimes jumped around a lot and it was very jarring. It wasn't clear in the audiobook when we were shifting perspectives. It could've used clear chapter breaks instead of a small number of very long chapters. The writing was enjoyable otherwise 4/5 Stars

Great mystery, look forward to the second book. Problems with Ariel's character, she seemed like two different people in the first and second half of the book. Used the character list at the front a lot, frustrating that Marina's character is unnecessarily spoiled in that.
