I'm in awe by how well written this is. Now on to the next book.

This instalment finds Levi trying to find out who inside the three main gangs in Vegas is trying to stir up trouble and start a gang war.

Dominic has his own case of a missing person that leads him to a deeper gang operation, where he discovers an underground casino ring.

The Seven of Spades sees Levi’s struggles with violence, though even when he himself is doubtful, Dom doesn’t believe for a second that Levi enjoys hurting others.

The mole is discovered, finally, but the Seven of Spades takes care of him before the police department and FBI can, body count continuing to rise.

I love all the mystery and the small pieces coming together with the research from the FBI on the Seven of Spades. Dominic’s gambling is well written as to its addictive quality, but as Levi said, what bothers him is Dominic’s lack of trust to tell Levi him of his relapse.

The gang fight scene is a great climax, and I enjoyed the casino scene with them both as well.

I’ve been so excited for this book and am still excited for the next and the rest of the series. However, I definitely preferred the first two books to this one. The stuff between Dom and Levi was tiring. Readers that love constant drama will love this book. For me, it was just too much. That’s not going to stop me from reading the next book in the series. Also, be forewarned, there are only three books in this series and so far each of them ends in a cliffhanger. I absolutely hate cliffhangers and yet here I am willing to read a third one knowing the ending, especially for this book, sucks. If you like mystery/crime books, this is a must read series!

I didn't like the direction the relationship between Levi and Dominic took in this instalment, nor the narrative purpose of the sex scenes. I could see how some readers would really enjoy this narrative choice, so it's definitely a case of reader preference, but I'll leave the series here as I don't see myself enjoying what's to come.

This was such a mess. I loved it!

It's a little difficult to know what to say about this book? Like, I enjoyed it — a lot — but it's also just a stepping stone towards the next two books? When you read a thriller series you know has five books, you're going to assume they won't find out who the serial killer is until the fourth or fifth book. And that means that you've got quite a few books to wade through before you get to the conclusion, and maybe not all of it will be as well-paced.

That's not to say that this was boring or without a plot — it's definitely building towards the climax and the characters went through quite a lot in this one — but, like, you KNOW you won't find out who the murderer is yet. Well, unless the author did a shitty job and you figure it out on your own — which I still haven't. I have suspects, but that's not saying much.

But yeah. I did like this book, but it's not quite as exciting as the first two. I'm fairly sure that things will get moving again in the next one, though. If nothing else because of where things left off in this one. There's, uh, a lot for the characters to handle. Which, I must say, I appreciate. I'm not as fond of angst and suffering as some are, but efforts are being made to make sure that the characters actually feel the stress and don't just miraculously shake off their trauma. I like the realism.

That said, I do question the realism a little in that so many people are queer. Don't get me wrong — representation is important — but it's almost to the point where it's weird? Like, usually, I don't meet a whole lot of people in real life who are queer. And I'm not talking about friend groups that you choose, okay? I mean that so many of the plot-important characters are gay. The main characters and their exes? Fine. Dominic's neighbour? Okay, still not weird. The slimy lawyer who has a surprisingly large role? Okay, still acceptable. Dominic's boss? Now we're pushing it a little. The ONE sexy FBI agent who's sent to handle the case? Now we're definitely pushing it. The crime boss who's one of the villains in this book and his boy toy? I'm done.

Again, don't get me wrong — I like representation — but it kinda starts feeling like the author is fishing for some sort of acceptance award when so many of the big hitters are queer, while a lot of the minor characters and extras (families, distant friends, coworkers etc.) are not. Like, these people, who are all very important to the plot, meet at random and they all happen to be queer? That has NEVER happened to me, at least not in real life. Am I moving in the wrong circles? Or does this universe Kingsbridge built just have a higher concentration of queer people? Which, honestly, would be fine as explanations goes, it's just a little weird when you picture it as our present day.

All of that aside, I do love this series and I'm eager to continue it! It's really well written, the story is great, and I enjoy the character.
