I smiled, laughed, and cried. I love cats, I have two beautiful rescued ladies, so this really hit home for me. Beautiful and heartbreaking. I fell in love with both Nana and Satoru.

Oh my god. This book was so wonderful. I couldn’t find a single thing wrong with it, so it was an easy five stars.

It’s narrated in first person by the cat, with frequent asides to describe the characters’ histories together. It has the classic structure of Japanese lit where each chapter focuses on a different person or topic.

I definitely cried at the end too. I think the translator did a wonderful job, communicating all the turns of phrase and beautiful imagery. The flowers, oh man…

Anyway, you should definitely read this book! It took me less than 24 hours and was so worth it.

This was an endearing (and somewhat cheesy) read that will tug at your heartstrings a bit. Written primarily from the perspective of a cat, I have to admit the author adopted a rather stereotypical personality for this cat (a bit defiant and very sassy), but it wasn’t eye-rolling or anything. Cat owners, this might get a chuckle out of you, knowing how cats can be, haha.

The story itself isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s a quiet one in which the cat reflects a bit on life and one’s relationships to others. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was philosophical in nature, but it definitely made me think about the brevity of life in the grand scheme of things.

I will say that I didn’t expect the story to go the direction it did towards the end (and not in a disappointing way). I think given the overall tone of the book, it was a small surprise.

Overall, a calming read and one I’d especially recommend to cat lovers.

Ummm even if you don’t like cats…read this book!!
I am not a cat lover but I’m a lover of a great story and this cat has a great story to tell! The beginning was a little slow but you do get in the groove of the writing style and you just getting wrapped up in the story and heart felt emotions! I will say grief is a topic in this story.

Also if you listen to the audio the narrator does a fantastic job at giving a voice to Nana!!! The sarcasm is everything! I literally laughed so hard multiple times!!

Found family doesn't just happen between humans. It can also grow between we and the fuzzy ones. This book ... It was a wonderful read, but it also was a hard hitter emotionally because of watching my mom go through cancer (in remission, she's a survivor, but that anxiety remains even still). I suspected what the cause behind Nana's attempted re-homing was not long after it was first mentioned, but the narrative emphasizes the journey over the destination. Satoru himself is a very likable character, a wholesome and gentle soul, and we get to see each person that touched his life and how he touched theirs in turn with the key moments.

Overall, I completely recommend reading this one and expect to come back to it myself in the future.
