I really respect Ashley for this. I’ve read a lot of poetry books from beautiful songwriters turned mediocre poets and this wasn’t one of them. Unlike the others, Halsey has a very clear style that I was able to follow and relate to deeply. Some poems, without even mentioning OCD, spoke to a reality I experience every day. I, personally, don’t resonate much with works about sex but I found myself dissecting her lines here and finding something meaningful to even me. All in all, it’s not my favorite collection I have ever read but it’s something that so wholly deserves to exist and be shared and loved. I would love to own a copy to annotate because I had a lot of thoughts throughout reading that I wanted to get down.

Really liked it this time around. Decided to try the audiobook rather than the physical book this time. Very glad I did!

Jan 2021- 3 stars

Half of the poems were incredible
The other half were really poor.

Absolutely beautiful. Heartbreaking, relatable. I hope she will release more of her poems.

I wouldn't lie but this collection had touched on a variety topics from heartbreak, society, womanhood, rape, sex, sexuality and so on. I had a few favourites from this collection but I will pick a piece of this poem called a 'story like mine' -

'LISTEN.
And then yell at the top of your lungs.
Be a voicefor all those who have prisoner tongues,
for the people who had to grow up way too young,
there is work to be done,
there are songs to be sung,
Lord knows there’s a war to be won.'

Definitely not my thing, some poems are too long for my tastes, but it's Halsey, so 2 stars

I liked some of the poems and some lines I definitely highlighted. However, there were some that were just OK and quite a bit of it didn't make me feel anything.
