2.5. Honestly pretty uneven. A few poems were really striking and well-crafted, and I can hear the rhythm in most of them. I respect the fact that there felt like there was a meta narrative in the collection. Giving voice to instances of abuse and assault is also powerful in this text, but my favorite poems were the ones that were notable exceptions to what felt like the through line of the work.

“Everything” stood out in its discussion of poverty and childhood imagination. “The professional” was sad and striking and really restrained in a way that the other poems were not, which I think made it more noteworthy. “Virus” was also a super weird nightmare of a poem that I really enjoyed.

The kind of brutal piece is that I don’t think this book would have been published if Halsey wasn’t Halsey.

So raw, so powerful.

Oh my god, is there anything Halsey cannot do artistically???? She writes, sings, makes music and draws beautifully. Love love love the writing style. The poems were very very raw and vivid. I’ve said this from times to times, and I will say it again. She’s the queen.

TW for the book: sexual abuse & suicidal ideation

I tried so hard to give this collection a chance after a friend lowkey forced me to read it, but it’s just... not good. A lot of the poetry reads amateurish at best. Lines like “does a ghost know if he’s a ghost? Does a saint know if she’s forgiven?” might sound great with a backing instrumental, but read weak on paper without the high production value supporting it. A lot of this is reminiscent to Gabbie Hanna’s collection, which is not a good thing to be compared to. A lot of these should have just been used as Instagram captions, at least they would’ve had an accompanying picture to distract from the lack of originality.

Me ha gustado reconocer las letras de sus canciones y que estas empezasen a resonar en mi cabeza.
dark emotional reflective sad

there was some really good things in here for sure but holy shit where was the editor??? any reviewing before publishing??? just like a lil proofreading to make sure the collection is cohesive, i beg. plus, so much of the poems are rough drafts/concept layouts for future songs and that just simply wasnt needed
