I’ve wanted to read Halsey’s I Would Leave Me If I Could poetry collection from the moment it was announced. They’re one of my favorite artists and since I think of songs as kind of like poetry anyway, I just couldn’t wait to read it! Obviously, wait I did to read as it’s been out for four years and I’m just now picking it up, but what can I say — I’m a procrastinator. I probably would have waited longer, but I recently got a text from my Halsey updates that it’s been out for four years, I needed a book to read, I looked to see if it was available on Libby and bada-bing-bada-boom it was and here we are. I Would Leave Me If I Could definitely felt very Halsey to me, there were tough poems to read that heart my hurt and I could just feel their voice coming loud and through. There were multiple poems that felt like songs (two poems here are actually in their discography, though they don’t reflect the full song) and there was just a rhythm and a rhyme that I loved reading. If you’re a fan of Halsey, I definitely recommend this even if you’re not particularly into poetry, I think you’ll easily recognize their voice and they’ll make you feel things like you do when you listen to their music — I know I felt that way and I’m so glad I’ve finally read it now and I would happily read anything Halsey put out in the future too!

This was…disappointing.

i had a fairly neutral opinion of halsey prior to reading this book, but now i gotta say it ain’t looking so hot. it felt like she was writing song lyrics that she could disguise as poems but it just didn’t work. there was rhyming just for the sake of rhyming and it felt like she was saying the same thing over and over again. i also have a problem with the self-depreciation of the title and the message of the overall collection; i mean i can respect some Depressing Poems but there was no light at the end of the tunnel here and for a person of such a high caliber it just felt kind of uncomfortable? idk but this book did not do it for me
