This has become a new favorite poetry collection. I loved this so much.

I honestly thought when Halsey announced the release of her debut poetry collection that it would have become an easy five-star review for me. So in some ways, I'm kind of...disappointed?

Halsey has always shared her poetry online, primarily on Tumblr, more so in the earlier years of the 2010s than post-2017 I want to say. I remember when they first shared "Summer Fruit" vividly. The imagery of swallowing the saccharine watermelon, grainy, juicy, flesh, seeds and all, stuck with me from that first read—so much so that I ended up writing my very own (and very first) fruit poem. A lot of my writing, especially from this period, is heavily inspired by Halsey's poetry and lyrics. And so the reason I have written this paragraph is to perhaps highlight where my disappointment stems from.

I Would Leave Me If I Could came out in 2020, but I think I read somewhere that the poems featured in this collection are a mix of new and old pieces that she has written over the years. I mention this because that much is evident when reading iwlmiic, with some poems coming across a bit amateur-ish while others showing Halsey's gained mastery over the years. Perhaps reading this collection at 27 is the reason I wasn't necessarily enthralled by each and every poem (God knows I would have devoured this at 17).

Nevertheless, the poems I liked, I liked a lot. Some were even so impactful that I had to close the book and put it down and leave my room. Not to mention one of the reasons I have been a fan of Halsey's writing for so long is that she has the ability to tell a story, take an experience that many of us have gone through and tell it in the most haunting, gut-punching, way, which is why I have so many pages dog-eared and many lines underlined.

I am sure that if Halsey decides to put out another poetry collection, it will be worthwhile. She started publishing poems and snippets of her writing again some time last year on Tumblr, sort of in preparation for her coming record, "The Great Impersonator," and it's conspicuous how much more refined her writing has become.

I really enjoy Halley’s music but for whatever reason this poetry didn’t resonate with me. I wanted it to be stronger, less victimized, a bit more advanced rhythmically, and a little more depth in the language used. There’s promise here but there’s growth to be had and the editing could use work.

a lot of the rhyming felt very forced, but on the other hand a lot of the poems seemed like they’re parts of a song unfinished

Poetry can be so heartbreaking and beautiful, this book is no exception… I felt pieces of my heart crumbled during several poems

Truly one of the most amazing and interpersonal collection of poems I’ve ever read

Her poetry hits me as hard as her music does.
