I loved the premise of this book, but the execution left a lot to be desired. The book just did not tell a compelling story and skilled from vignette to vignette without building a main thesis for the book. I really really wanted to like this book but could not. I did learn a thing or two but there was so much more that could have been done with this topic.

Easy to follow well written. this book tells the story about how librarians , authors and publishers came together to entertain educate and support the soldiers of WWII. Creating a generation of well read, educated, and book loving adults.

I loved learning about books being used as weapons against Hitlers ideologies, and the comfort they brought to the military. Many of whom had never read before enlisting found solace in the stories from home and continued their love of reading even after the war. I loved reading about the publishing companies ideas and their passion for distributing books to the service men. The only reason I didn’t rate it higher is because it read a little dry at times. But a good book for any history lover.

An interesting account about how books were organized and distributed to the front to keep the soldiers' morale high. Information was repetitive from time to time, but "When Books Went to War" was overall well written on the topic which isn't discussed quite often.
I loved to learn about some titles which were popular among the soldiers but are no longer in print.
I recommend this book!

Five stars for this book and the author. Five stars for the people who understood how important books and knowledge are. Five stars for working tirelessly to help soldiers receive a little comfort while also bettering themselves. Five stars for the ability to work together for something bigger than oneself and bigger than profit.
I wanted to read this book because I had heard a small blurb about it, and was mildly interested purely because I love books. ...I was not prepared for how incredibly meaningful and detailed the history was that came with it! I stopped reading multiple times to share details with my patient husband, and even with that finished the book in less than 24 hours time.
The gist of my review is this: every person should read this book. It makes history come alive, and emphasizes the incredible role that books play in our hearts, lives, politics, and countries.
