From reading other's reviews on this book it seems it's one where you either love it or you hate it. I absolutely ADORED it. The way Sarah weaves such an artful, almost melodic tale is impressive. I found myself not only cheering on our fiesty and a little feral Raeve, but every unique and interesting side character wound their way into my heart. As with every first book in a fantasy series, there is a lot of world building, but it's not so convoluted that I felt I had to study the helpful glossary at the beginning of the book. No, every bit of lore was eased into and felt very organic. The magic system based on the elements is not new by any stretch of the imagination but the way Sarah put her own spin on it made it feel fresh and exciting. The slow-burn romance had me kicking my feet and giggling in every instance, even when Raeve and Kaan fought you could feel the flame between them burning brighter than the sun that shines above the Burn. I eagerly await the next installment of this series!

*Possible Spoiler*

I loved this book so much I picked it up one evening around 10pm and had to make myself put it down at 7:30am and get some sleep. I finished it later that day.

However, I HATE cliffhanger endings and this one has one of the biggest I’ve ever read. I would have rated it much lower for that but I know there’s a second book come in a month or so. That said, I’m left feeling very frustrated with a non-ending end.

I read the digital version which said there was about 30 minutes of read time remaining. Apparently that included all the notes at the end so it was really only a minute or so of the actual book remaining.

The notes at the end would have been nice to have at the beginning, especially the pronunciation guide and the content/trigger warnings.

Loved as much as, if not more than ACOTAR. Can't wait for book 2 - what a cliffhanger. If you consider yourself a Nesta fan, get ready for Raeve! She is Nesta x10. Great world building, dark humor, yearning. This book left me devastated at times. Gut-wrenching.

Read this and initially didn’t like it but bestie had me reread it. I do think I was super distracted the first time I read it and I couldn’t keep up with the storylines. Second time around I thoroughly enjoyed. I did have to go back and relisten to several parts when I got distracted. Super fun read.

This book was really neat. The pity was it was a pendulum swinging between stuff I hated and stuff I loved. The world was complex and interesting to read about, but many, many times it let the romance plot shoot the pacing of the entire story in the foot. There was a point where it all became exhausting and felt like a solid chunk of chapters in the middle could have been completely eliminated. I cannot think of any purpose for them other than just being a slice of life moment.

However, the reason it was so frustrating when these chapters would happen was because the rest of the book was fantastic. If it weren't for the messily executed romance plot and repetitive bits, it would have sat up there with my favorite romantasies. Which are extremely hard to touch.

The action was fantastic and the world was truly a highlight. I love the inclusion of the glossary and index. Which may not be everyones cup of tea but it was definitely mine. Some of the romance scenes were perfectly steamy
(when Kaan gives her his necklace.... Bro..... I was kicking my feet. )
and the plot itself was constantly surprising and fun.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The low rating sadly comes purely from the slog of the middle bit. It truly frustrated me. It made me sad because it was so obvious this writer was great, but I felt she was bogged down by the need for the egregious romance.

I would recommend to someone who can get through that stuff though!
