The first time in a long time I've actually cried happy tears.
I struggled to know what I was going to rate this book. There were parts in this book that were incredible, including the prologue. I was hooked from there. I struggled with the pacing because it was quite inconsistent. I feel the pacing is quite slow as it takes a good while to build up to the main story.
However the world building up to this point is impeccable and really gives you a feel for this world. I really enjoyed the concept of the world, quite a simple concept of the world but interesting and really went into depth. It turned a very simple idea of a world,
My main criticism of the book was that it did take a while to get into. The pacing was a little all over the place and I did get lost at parts. The glossary is helpful in understanding the world.
I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book x

the world-building and story itself are super compelling, especially as the structure unfolds and you understand the multiple timelines at play. really fun magic/dragons/lore!
there are a LOT of characters and terms to learn (it's like 700 pages), but the glossary is helpful. I hope more of the backstory this book relies on by implication is more flushed out in the next book, since there are definitely a lot of details that are left unclear by the end of book 1.
also, honestly not too spicy! there are a few scenes that are pretty explicit, but most of the romance is yearning and ~LOOKING~ there's something a little off-putting about the way the main character's body is described (a little "I boobed boobily down the stairs"), but overall her girlbossing was fun and satisfying

This was maybe 1/5 on the spice level. Not even a page midway thought the book then about 10% left it got a page or two of spice. It’s heavy on fantasy and about one day old jalapeño for spice, a step above fresh ground pepper.
I didn’t enjoy that you had to flip back and forth between a glossary at the beginning of the book to have an idea of what the people/places/things were. I much rather a description in the story.
This is also a whopping 700+ pages which caught me off guard.
The story? Chefs kiss. It was just a suuuper slow start and I contemplated not finishing but I held on. Once it got to page 200ish, I was glad I held on.
